Functional Medicine
The Institute For Functional Medicine:
“Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership”
Functional Medicine is this magical art and science of really seeing the body “wholly” through objective data and laboratory testing. When I first attended “Mastering The Thyroid” with Dr. Datis Kharrazian, DHSc, DC, MS, MNeuroSci, FAACP, DACBN, DABCN, DIBAK, CNS – in Feb 2011, everything changed. I was able to take back to my patients a new level of empowerment to help lift them to even higher levels of vitality and well-being. For this science, I am tremendously grateful.
Looking at lab results through the eyes of Functional Medicine reveals dysfunction that lies beneath the laboratory’s pathological lab ranges. What that means is that when your labs come back “normal,” it doesn’t mean you don’t have something brewing under the surface of the “normal lab range”. As an example, just because a glucose level of 127 is required to be diagnosed as a diabetic, does it really mean that you don’t have diabetes at 126? Disease is a process, it takes a path to get there – and if we can find out earlier that you’re on the path to disease X, then we can intervene with nutrition and other physiologically enhancing treatments that can help you trace the steps back to its origin.
Functional Medicine requires us to investigate further by testing for underlying mechanisms that may have been overlooked such as: gluten sensitivity, food allergies, cross-reactivity, autoimmunity, leaky gut, thyroid dysfunction, and hormonal balance.
If you’re frustrated about your health and your symptoms, and your lab tests keep coming back normal – give us a call and bring them in. We’ll take a look through the Functional Medicine lens and see what we can find!
